Successful TMJ treatment by Miami specialist Dr. Sam Sadati

The temporo-mandibular joint, known as the TMJ, is one of the most complex joints in the human body. It enables rotational movement on a hinge, as well as sliding movement forward and back and even side to side. When it is functioning well, we can eat and speak normally.

But for some people, the TMJ is literally a headache. When it is not functioning harmoniously, it can cause debilitating migraine headaches, other types of pain, popping noises, or ringing in the ears. It can also get stuck open, or its movement can be limited so that it can't open wide enough to chew.

What is a TMJ Specialist?

The regular dental school curriculum only provides some very basic instruction to dentists in TMJ treatment. This training isn't adequate for most of the complex cases that occur, so dentists need advanced training to be successful at this treatment.

However, we need to clarify that, even though this extra training is required, TMJ treatment is not a regularly recognized specialty of dentistry, so there is actually no such thing as a TMJ specialist. But people still use that term.

While Dr. Sadati is licensed as a general dentist, some people think of him as a TMJ specialist because he has had extensive training in this disorder, and has a long history of successful cases that he has treated. He has completed postgraduate coursework in TMJ treatment (also called neuromuscular dentistry) at the renowned Las Vegas Institute.

Do You Have TMJ Disorder?

Here are some of the symptoms:

  • The most common symptoms are migraine-like headaches that seem to originate from the side of the head or behind the eyes.
  • Tension headaches that seem to come from the back of the head or the neck. These headaches can radiate pain to the shoulders.
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
  • Dizziness.
  • Popping or crackling noises coming from the jaw joint.
  • Inability to open the jaw normally.
  • Inability to close the jaw completely.
  • Difficulty in chewing.
  • Fatigue in the jaw muscles after chewing or talking.
  • Excessive tooth wear.
  • Soreness in the jaw muscles when you wake up in the morning.

Sometimes people have had these symptoms for years and have gone from dentist to dentist looking for relief without finding it. If this is your case, please consider this an invitation to call our office and schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Sadati to discuss your problems. We're confident he will be able to help you. Again, while there is no such thing as a TMJ specialist, if there were such a classification, Dr. Sadati could be considered for that designation. He has special diagnostic tools including the K7 electromyograph. He has high-tech treatment devices such as the Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation device (TENS unit) that can send relaxing impulses to overly stressed jaw muscles. And he has the extensive training required to understand all aspects of this complex disorder.
